This week on Alcohollywood, we (along with Jason Soto of Lair of the Unwanted) finally take on our first Tom Cruise movie with the Ridley Scott fantasy Legend! Right off the heels of Jared’s appearance on the Blade Runner episode of the Nerd Outcast Podcast, we take on another 1980s Ridley Scott movie featuring unicorns and inhuman creatures. This time, though, we get to see a young, buck-toothed Tom Cruise battle a devilish Tim Curry (as literally the Devil) for the soul of his princess lover Mia Sara.
Along the way, we get some imps, surprisingly modern goblin henchmen, and Frozen parallels, as we chat it up about our favorite movie Satans, find even more euphemistic uses for the word ‘magic,’ and so much more. Check out our custom cocktail and drinking game below, and be sure to listen to (and share) the episode!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: Fairy Glamour
Based around the fantasy themes of the film, the idyllic nature of the film’s forest setting, and the scene where Tom Cruise has to drink elderberry wine, we created a wine cocktail that incorporates some other sweet, fruity flavors into this already-sweet base. (It’s a simple one this week, but since it’s a wine cocktail we wanted to make sure we didn’t mix too many other liquors in, or muddle the flavor of the elderberry wine too much.)
3 part elderberry wine
1 part pomegranate juice
dash, grapefruit bitters
2 mint leaves
splash, soda water (optional)
1) Combine wine, juice and bitters in a glass over ice. (Add the soda water if you want to lighten the heaviness of the wine.)
2) Distress the mint leaves by clapping them between your hands hard, and garnish on top.
DRINKING RULES FOR LEGEND:
- Every time you see loving close-ups of people staring
- Whenever characters engage in rhyme
- ‘Benataring’ (i.e. whenever characters move in slow motion by themselves through a sumptuous, mood-lit set, like a Pat Benatar video)
FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:
Darkness shouts his final monologue, “You think you have won! What is light without dark? What are you without me? I am a part of you all. You can never defeat me. We are brothers eternal!”
Join us next week with a new film – and a new sound! – as we finally order some upgraded equipment for the Peter Fonda/Warren Oates 1975 car/Satanic panic movie Race with the Devil!
