Excited about The Avengers? Afraid it’s going to be crap? Don’t care, but love superheroes? Look no further than Marvel Month, where Alcohollywood reviews and creates drinking games for the five superhero movies of the characters soon to join forces in The Avengers!
This week, we’re starting with a double feature of the two Iron Man movies, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as charismatic playboy/inventor/perpetually dying Tony Stark. Iron Man proved to a world enamored with brooding superheroes (e.g. Nolan’s Batman) that you could successfully do a fun, lighthearted superhero movie, and Iron Man 2 proved that you could really mess up a good formula by shoehorning spinoff material into your main plot. Either way, both movies have their good and bad points, both of which we cover in this episode!

1 part spinach juice
2 parts cucumber juice
3 parts green apple juice
5 parts mandarin-flavored vodka
1 teaspoon pepper
Combine in glass, over ice.

MARVEL MONTH DRINKING RULE: Drink whenever Stan Lee makes his cameo
- Whenever Tony reassures someone he’s fine (e.g. the company, his health)
- Any time Tony and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) bicker
- Every time you hear the signature sound of Iron Man’s energy weapons
FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:
Iron Man: Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) says “I am Iron Man.”
Iron Man 2: Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) says “You need to solve the riddle of your heart.”
Next week, we get very angry as we review and drink to Edward Norton’s reboot/sequel/whatever to the superhero franchise that just can’t get an actor to stay in the role – 2008’s The Incredible Hulk!

Minor bone to pick regarding the rules. Bich and I played this game watching both movies, and Tony Stark almost never reassures anyone that he is okay. The rule should be, “Drink whenever anyone shows concern for Tony Stark.” Just saying. Lots of fun though!
