This week, Geek Girl Chicago herself Lauren Faits joins us as we finish up our month-long quest with last year’s Oscar Best Picture-nominee The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon as a smarmy botanist who has to Robinson Crusoe his way through Mars while stranded there after being left for dead. A wonderfully straightforward crowd-pleaser, The Martian manages to make science cool again by focusing on the methodical, analytical problem-solving, while miraculously keeping things entertaining. Don’t just take our word for it, though; check out our episode, along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: Major Rick Martinez
This variant on the classic Martinez cocktail, named after Michael Peña’s character, swaps out gin for starfruit-infused vodka (because potatoes! and space!) and sweet vermouth for dry. Enjoy along with some crushed Vicodin along the rim, if you’re feeling dangerous! (Please drink responsibly.)
2 1/4 oz starfruit-infused vodka
1 1/2 oz dry vermouth
¼ oz maraschino liqueur
1 dash lemon bitters
Combine in a mixing glass along with large cold ice cubes and stir until mixed and chilled. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a slice of starfruit.
DRINKING RULES FOR THE MARTIAN:
- Anytime Matt Damon uses duct tape to fix something
- Whenever the mission control crew erupts in applause (often prematurely)
- Every time you see the word ‘Sol’ on screen, along with ‘ding’ sound
FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:
Jessica Chastain’s character says, “Maybe it’s not the worst idea in the world…”
Join us next week as we take on all ‘rain’ movies in April, starting with the flood-centric thriller Hard Rain!
