150TH EPISODE SPECIAL: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) w/Our Fair City & Geek Girl Chicago

indiana jones last crusade

It’s our 150th episode, and Alcohollywood is bringing back Chicago-geek power couple Clayton Faits (of Our Fair City) and Lauren Faits (aka Geek Girl Chicago) to talk about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade! In honor of our very first episode, where we covered Crystal Skull, we decided to look back on the third Indy film! Here, the titular adventurer (Harrison Ford) must beat the Nazis to an historical religious artifact with great power – sound familiar? Along the way, though, he learns a few lessons about family from his bookish, stern dad (a wonderful Sean Connery) and gives a lesson in arithmetic to his friend Sallah (John Rhys-Davies). Crusade leans a bit much on the stuff people liked about Raiders of the Lost Ark, but its greater comedic edge, and the impeccable comic chemistry between Ford and Connery, help to make this one a classic.

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: The Carpenter’s Cup

indiana jones and the last crusade cocktailOnly the penitent man may fully enjoy this drink, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. This Grail-inspired beverage starts with Scotch whiskey for that Connery influence, then mixes some Middle Eastern fruits and spices to capture the feel of the film’s climax in Hatay. Enjoy!

2 parts blended Scotch whiskey
1 part Chardonnay (skew towards oakier varieties if possible)
1 part mezcal
2 parts apricot juice
dash, pureed date
dash, ground clove
1/2 lemon
tobacco tincture (to taste)

1) On a grill or grill pan at searing high heat, grill your 1/2 lemon face down for 5-7 minutes or until it gets nicely caramelized.
2) Puree your date and mix together with the ground clove to form a loose paste.

3) Add remaining ingredients in mixer; stir to combine.
4) Pour neatly into a wine glass; garnish with grilled lemon slice, date, and maraschino cherry.

DRINKING RULES FOR INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE:

  1. The Breath of God – Drink whenever someone does a one-punch knockout
  2. The Word of God – Drink anytime Indy says “Dad” or “Father.”
  3. The Path of God – Drink every time Indy gets in or out of a vehicle

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Henry Jones Sr. says, “Indiana…let it go.”

  1. I’m really curious as to who came up with these drinks. I can’t tell if they’re intentionally bad or going to be one of these drinks that knocks your socks off, not just because you’re so surprised it doesn’t make you vomit, but because it’s amazing
