This week on Alcohollywood, we take advantage of our repaired Alcohollywood Laptop©, along with returning guest Todd, to check out 1995’s French steampunk fantasy The City of Lost Children! Directed by Amelie’s Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the film takes place in an Expressionist fairy-tale in which a cantankerous mad scientist captures children in order to steal their dreams, while a dim-witted strongman (Ron Perlman) seeks to recover his captured petit frère with the help of a precocious child thief (Judith Vittet).
The film is pure French carnivalesque whimsy, with mind-control-serum flies, talking brains in jars, Santa clones, and so much more dreamlike weirdness that contributes to a very unconventional, but visually and thematically rewarding, film. Check out our episode along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!
NOTE: If there’s crackling or some channel loss in small portions, I apologize; this was recorded with my old failing laptop while I waited to get our primary machine back. Luckily, we’re back in business now!

Yes, the name’s an obvious joke, but screw it, it’s too good. For this green-tinted bit of crazytown, we used absinthe as the basis for this drink, while offering some refreshing herbal notes from the basil and cucumber and some fizziness from the soda water. Sweet dreams!
1 part absinthe
cucumber
basil leaves
3 parts silver tequila
1 part citrus syrup
5 parts soda water
- Muddle basil and cucumber at the bottom of the shaker; add ice.
- Add absinthe, tequila and citrus syrup; shake well to combine.
- Strain straight into cocktail glass and top with soda water.
DRINKING RULES FOR THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN:
- Any time you see a prominent shot of eyes or eye prostheses
- Every time someone screams
- Critters (e.g. dogs, fleas, other animals or insects)
FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:
Martha (Melinda Mosse) says, in reaction to a clone asking if she’s okay after getting impaled by a harpoon, “Yes! I’m allergic to steel!”
